Good Fit Books

Over the past few days we have worked on choosing 'Good Fit books,' or 'Just Right books.' A just right book is a book that is not too easy or too hard, we can read most words independently. We will read the fun story of Goldie Socks and The Three Libearians to help us understand 5 finger rule better. Ask us how the 5 finger rule works. We talked a lot about finding books that would challenge our brains to become better readers. Sometimes it is fun to read a book that is easy, we call this when our brain is "on vacation," but most of the time we want to be reading stories at our just right level. Spending time each day with a 'Just Right' book is the best way to improve reading fluency, decoding, and ability. We will build on decoding and comprehension concepts from first grade to build a stronger reading foundation.

What if I am a strong decoder and know all the words when trying to find a 'Just Right' book?
This is tricky in 2nd grade especially as we demonstrate the ability to decode and read more difficult words fluently. Sometimes we think because we know all the words that we are understanding it too. This year we will work a lot reading comprehension, understanding what we read by making connections, retelling story plot, and asking questions....Just to name a few!
