Pine Cone Exploration

We have had a great fall to enjoy nature...although, the rain sort of cramped our style this week in continuing to observe & collect artifacts. However, we have all year to observe trees and track them through the seasons...what better place to do it than NH? We are so lucky. Since it was such a rainy week we used the opportunity to explore pine cones. It was a great way to start using our science journals & work on some inquiry. We started by observing a dry pine cone using our senses. We used words, pictures & labels to document our experience. We then made predictions about what would happen if the pine cone got wet. It took awhile to get results although we noticed the water quickly changed to brown and mucky. The next day, we were surprised to find that the pine cone was completely closed up! We learned about making predictions and using the evidence of our findings to support our beliefs and thoughts. This is just the beginning of lots of hands on, inquiry based science fun!

We have generated questions we have about trees to help guide our exploration...we have a very inquisitive bunch.
