Pourquoi means "why" in French.
What is a Pourquoi Tale? As a Pourquoi story unfolds it tells how a particular animal, person, or thing came to be the way it is today. A Pourquoi Tale answers the question why in a "made up way" rather than a "scientific way."
Some Examples:
-Why the zebra got its stripes-- How the leopard got its spots-- Why the sun and the moon live in the sky--

How the Lion Got Its Roar
Long, long ago when the earth was
new lions had no roar. One day a baby lion was born in the African Safari where
the sun was always shining bright in the sky and trees grew everywhere. As soon
as the baby lion got out of its mother’s belly he tried to roar. He tried very
hard but he couldn’t. All the lions made fun of him except one lion. The lion said
to the little guy, “I will teach you to hunt, play and eat.” He was like a
brother to him. One day, the two of them went for a walk. They walked and
walked and walked together. The bigger lion stepped on little ones paw and he
said his first roarrrrr. When he grew up he became king of the safari and used
his roar to control all of the animals….and that’s how the lion got its
roar!
