Good Fit Books

This class LOVES to read! They even choose to read in their "free" time and love chapter books, picture books, fiction, non-fiction...you name it they'll read it! We have a lot of knowledge about choosing "goodfit/just-right" books from last year and learned a new strategy to help us choose new books this week. The I-PICK acronym comes from "the sisters," authors of the CAFE & Daily 5. Both are reading structures we will engage in within Readers' Workshop. I-Pick  reminds us WE choose the books we want to read. We want to pick books we are interested in, can understand, and know most of the words. Today's lesson compared choosing a "good-fit book" to choosing the shoes we wear each day. Each shoe, like the fancy wedding shoes I wore, has a specific purpose. I wouldn't want to wear them to the gym! We talked about my shoes not being a good-fit for another friend because we are all working on different things. I tried on Mr. Mizzi's large yellow books to show that they were not a good fit...too big. The kids got a kick out of trying them on too.  Amidst giggles we noticed it was difficult and a bit frustrating to walk in them...just like a difficult book feels. We spent our reading time testing out different books based on interest & reading level. We will do more with picking "good-fit" books next week. Keep up reading at home!
