March 28th-April 1st

Another fantastic solo week, another week of learning and exploring together! Last week we began working on reading and writing nonfiction books. We began learning about what makes nonfiction books unique and different from fiction books. We created our own nonfiction convention notebooks to define and illustrate different parts of nonfiction. So far we have worked on maps, photographs, and labels.  In reading we also worked on practicing our Thomas Locker and original poems for our Poetry Cafe.

In Writer's Workshop we began researching animals to write about in our own nonfiction books! We used the website pebblego.com, to research information on different animal's anatomy, habitat, diet and interesting facts. We loved researching on the iPad! Mrs. O'Connor, the technology teacher, helped us use enchantedlearning.com during technology class to find pictures of our animals along with more information and pictures. Stay tuned for another update once we finish our books!

In Math we worked on ballpark estimates, rounding, and worked more with missing addends. We have done a great job working in our math rotations and math journals. During our Genius Hour with the fifth graders we worked on the scientific method using science experiments. We are looking forward to debriefing on the experiments more this week.

On Monday we began reading Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as our class read aloud. Then on Thursday we saw the fourth and fifth grader's dress rehearsal of their version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They did great! It was fun to compare the beginning of the book to the play. We also enjoyed seeing many of our Genius Hour buddies in their costumes!
