Folktales and Fairytales

We have been enjoying our unit on folklore and learned lots of new things about these classic texts. Our literacy block has been dedicated to reading and creating our own tales. We have learned about the characters in our texts, the components that make up a these stories and the overall theme or lesson that can be learned!
One common component of all fairytales is royalty-- a king, queen, prince or princess. We created our own queen & kings and I have to say they came out great. We had kings and queens of Harry Potter, ice cream & dogs to name a few...

We have especially loved reading Fractured Fairytales! These stories put a twist on the original classic story. Some of our favorites have been Somebody and the Three Blairs and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Ask us about them! We have also enjoyed comparing and contrasting two versions of the same story. We tied in our prior China study through reading Yeh Shen (the Chinese version of Cinderella) and Lo Po Po (Little Red Riding Hood). We are looking forward to our upcoming Fairytale Luncheon next week!
